I met him in IRC when I was maybe 17 or 18, and that was almost a decade ago. I've been a professional software developer for 7 years now, and he was one of the first people I looked up to and learned from. I still use some of his accomplishments as examples of excellent software development talent today. He was amazingly brilliant, and contributed to me becoming who I am today. I now really regret not making the time to meet him in person when I was working in Australia. You will be missed archaios...

I am David's mum. Thank you all for your wonderful tribute. I would appreciate hearing directly from you who knew him, in this world which is so unfamiliar to me. My email is fjpm@optusnet.com.au - I am preparing a permanent tribute and would like to include all who were part of his short, brilliant life.

If the world would be .., free of people trying to prove something to themselves .., it would be a perfect world .., but why he is dead .., he was so young

It seems you didn't have a long fulfilling life, and that's unfortunate. There's nothing worse than losing a member of the community. One less persons personality, opinion, talent and all those other little things that really make people wonderful to be around. And most of all one less person to share ideas with. Too bad I never really got a chance to talk to you, you live on in IRC logs and it makes me sad to see the words you've posted sort of echoing with lost meaning."And that's all I gots to say about that"

David Mcilwraith

aka Archaios

David spent most of his time finding some way to annoy the people around him. However, there were a few who recognized him for his potential, humor, and skill.
He was well-renowned for his abilities in system programming: creating his own IRCd, working with select architectures such as ARM and x86, and generally his expertise in shellcode and C. He was more 'curious' than a hacker: he never meant harm to anyone, although there were quite a few cases where he was nearly caught up. His character is however the most memorable--you either loved him or hated him.

In the end, though, being his friend would’ve changed anyone’s life. It was absolutely a gift to meet him--someone to never forget.

An excerpt from his mother:
“David was truly one of a kind, and has left an indelible impression on all who knew him. He drove almost all of us to distraction at one time or another (and me, much of the time), but we loved him dearly...”.
